    Weekend Picks Aug. 2-4

From a great concert benefit to ballroom dancing to drinking destinations, we've got you covered for weekend fun.

  • Pete Arevalo

Tickets for the benefit show "For Pete's Sake" are $10 and include the new Acoustic Pete Blues Trio live disc, "Shootout at the Spirit Ranch." Also, for $10, there's an all-you-can-eat barbecue (kids under 10 eat free), plus 50/50 drawings and a silent auction. The event runs from 1 to 8 p.m. The Old Packinghouse is at 987 S. Packinghouse Road, Sarasota.

    For Pete's Sake

Musician and Spirit Ranch Recording Studio owner "Acoustic" Pete Arevalo has organized and hosted so many benefit shows, he can't count them all. Now area musicians are coming together "For Pete's Sake" on Sundayat JR's Old Packinghouse Cafe. Arevalo, frontman of the Acoustic Pete Blues Trio and Swamp Grass, is battling back from oral cancer. Proceeds from the concert will help with Arevalo's medical bills and lost income. Sunday's lineup will include Kettle of Fish, Mumbo Jumbo, Twinkle, Lauren Mitchell Band, RJ Howson Band and Berry Oakley's Skylab, among others. READ MORE.

    Florida State Dancesport Championship

Ballroom dancing may have only gone mainstream in the past decade but ballroom competitions have been taking place for more than half a century. The Florida State Dancesport Championship – featuring professional and amateur competitors as well as exhibition performers – celebrated its 40th anniversary last year and is one of the more venerable in the nation. Read Herald-Tribune arts writer Carrie Seidman's piece about four local amateur competitors who will be "takin' on the Ritz."

  • JP Soars This Weekend feat

JP Soars and the Red Hots

Blues guitar slinger, singer and songwriter JP Soars and his Red Hots band documented their first European tour with the sizzling new CD “Live from the Netherland.” It’s a rich collection of varied originals peppered with choice covers such as Soars’ awesomely nasty rendition of Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Gangster of Love.” Soars, he lives in Boca Raton, is also part of the group Southern Hospitality (check out my Ticket cover story) with pianist/vocalist Victor Wainwright and former Bradenton Beach resident Damon Fowler (guitar, vocals). Southern Hospitality was just nominated in the New Artist Debut Release and Blues Band of the Year categories for the 2013 Blues Blast Music Awards.

    'Beach Blanket Bingo'

The 1960s were full of silly beach party movies, especially ones starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. But "Beach Blanket Bingo," this week’s Film Fridays feature at South Florida Museum’s all-digital domed theater Bishop Planetarium, is one of the best. Credit wildness factors like a kidnapped teen idol, a mermaid and Don Rickles at his insulting finest. Beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.
