It has been a huge year in Southwest Florida for singing stars. Bradenton resident Sam Woolf finished fifth on "American Idol" while Sarasota native Josh Kaufman won "The Voice." On Friday, local singers age 15 and older will compete for cash and the crown of "Charlotte Idol." The winner receives $1,000 while second places earns $500 and third gets $250. All proceeds benefit the organizer, Charlotte County Homeless Coalition. VIP tickets are $70 per person with doors opening at 5 p.m. for dinner buffet and cash bar.

6 p.m. Friday; Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center, 75 Taylor St., Punta Gorda; $20 (generla admission); 627-4313, ext. 118; cchomelesscoalition.org
