Speaking of my gays, this past weekend was Gay Pride in most spots throughout the country. New York, San Francisco, and all little towns in between shut down parts of their downtowns for parades and festivities.

I crossed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge this weekend to show my support for the GLBT community in St. Petersburg.  It seems that was the closest Pride celebration.

Sarasota's Pride Fest doesn't happen until October. How odd, I thought, that while the entire rest of the country is celebrating at the same time, our city opts for the fall month.

I can appreciate the date change, just for the sheer weather value. It was so hot this weekend I was tempted to strip off my shorts and parade around as nature intended.  (And many a St. Pete Pride paradegoer did.)

But the heat Sunday couldn't melt the good feeling from the overwhelming turnout from our sister city's community of gays, lesbians and their allies.  Thousands packed the streets of Central Avenue, including many of our familiar Sarasota faces, including Zara Barrie, Shakira Refos, Shalin Carpenter, Erik Fanuelsen, Bob Overholser, Toby Gentile and scads more.

Rather than pout that our city's festivities aren't happening this summer, I guess we get to experience two Pride Fests per year. That'll do, St. Pete. That'll do.
