JDub's brews beer with local band Hail Dale

/

colashaw19A local band has teamed up with a local craft brewer to create a music-inspired beer. Hail Dale, described by guitarist/singer Chris Flannagan as a “trashy Southern rock” trio, worked with JDub’s Brewing Co. (1215 Mango Ave.) in Sarasota on Hail Dale Pale Ale, which will be served at about 10 shows around the region this summer.

“Every show we play, we’ll release a keg of it,” Flannagan said today in a phone interview. He started Hail Dale with guitarist/singer Garrett Von Rad and drummer Duff Cobra as a joke, but things evolved once they played some shows and began to write their own songs: “good party rock and roll” mixing garage, Southern rock, country and blues and influenced by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Led Zeppelin. They were surprised to discover that, “Damn, this is good,” he said. They recorded their first album, “Smoke It Off,” at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, Tennessee.

Flannagan said his band was inspired by the beer and music collaborations done by Rock Brothers Brewing in Tampa, which has made beers with bands like Bradenton’s Have Gun Will Travel.

They approached JDub’s almost on a whim, Flannagan said, but brewer founder Jeremy Joerger thought a collaboration beer was a great idea.

“The beer turned out really good,” Flannagan added. I’m not surprised, JDub’s brews some great liquids. He described the beer as having a strong edgy bitterness for a pale ale. The brewery tapped an oak-aged test batch last weekend and it sold out quickly, he said.

They will be playing (and drinking) at The Whiskey Barrel (6540 Superior Ave.) on July 5, Growler’s Pub (2831 N. Tamiami Trail) on July 11 and the The Shamrock Pub (2257 Ringling Blvd.) on Aug. 2. More tour dates will be announced; you can get the latest details by visiting the band’s Facebook page.

This is JDub's first collaboration with a band, but they are no strangers to teaming up, having partnered with St. Pete Brewing Co.Siesta Key Rum maker Drum Circle Distilling in Sarasota and Tampa's Cigar City Brewing and Three Palms Brewing, among others.
