Starting Thursday, World of Beer (8217 Tourist Center Drive, University Park) will sell 32-ounce growlers of beer, according to its newsletter. A growler is a reusable jug that's filled at the tap, allowing people to take draft beer to go. Many craft brews are only offered in kegs, so growlers let fans drink that beer at home.

The bar will sell empty growlers for $5. Loyalty members can buy them for $2.50. The fills of beer will be sold at a 25 percent discount off the regular draft price, according to managing partner Dean Lambert.

"We are basically selling them for cost," Lambert wrote in an email.

If sales of 32-ounce growlers go well, World of Beer will start selling 128-ounce (1 gallon) growlers, Lambert said, adding that people can bring in their own 32-ounce growlers; you don't have to use the World of Beer ones. (The industry standard 64-ounce growlers aren't legal in Florida, but that's a whole different story.)

There won't be any limits on the number of growlers you can buy, Lambert said, but some specialty beers won't be available in growlers.

The two World of Beer pubs in the works in Bradenton and downtown Sarasota will also sell growlers, Lambert wrote.
