Get ready for some smoke on the water, just a little farther south this weekend than in the summer. The daredevil participants in the inaugural Charlotte Harbor Super Boat Grand Prix arrive Thursday at the south end of Manasota Key for the crowd-wowing, water-race that runs through Sunday and includes a boat parade 4:30 p.m. Friday through downtown Punta Gorda. The races, split into several divisions, are the second stop for the Super Boat International 2014 tour. SBI also sanctions the July 4 Suncoast races in Sarasota, which has hosted an event for 30 years.
Keep in mind, from Friday through Sunday, the race boats and vendors will take over the public beach parking lot. That means there will be no parking available on Manasota Key for race-goers. Instead, there is designated satellite parking within 5-8 miles of the event, allowing attendees to enjoy an air-conditioned, chauffeured ride to the event.
