Joan Rivers agreed to start our recent interview with a little fun involving Sarasota’s celebrities. Basically, I gave her a name and she shot back with an instant response. Here’s what she had to say about everyone from Nik Wallenda and Rosie O’Donnell to James Carville and Mary Matalin.
Rosie O’Donnell: Adore her! Think she’s brilliant. I drove past her house in Sarasota the last time I was down there.
Stephen King: I read his books and just watched “Dolores Claiborne” on TV the other night. How about that? He sure is getting as far away from Maine as possible.
Jerry Springer (recently hosted “The Price is Right Live!” at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall): Oh, how cute! I interviewed him years ago and liked him very much.
Dick Smothers: He’s adorable! We worked together and I love Tom (Smothers), too. I love the Smothers Brothers. We did a tour together. It was me and Jim Stafford and the Smother Brothers. It was the first time the three of us went on tour. Those were different times!
Nik Wallenda: I think he’s an idiot but if you want to do it, go ahead. He’s obviously not Jewish. That’s the only thing I can say about him. Not one of my people! You want to walk across the Grand Canyon on a wire, good luck!
Dick Vitale: (My daughter) Melissa is a huge sports watcher and listener and goer. She would get all excited that he was in town.
Brian Johnson (lead singer of AC/DC): Slept with him. Next.
Joe Perry (of Aerosmith): Slept with him. Next.
Dickey Betts: Slept with him.
James Carville and Mary Matalin: I’m very liberal and we did it in Arizona. I slept with both of them.
Katherine Harris: She’s a very good friend of (superstar socialite) Marylou Whitney. She’s really into horses and we met and all of us were standing in horseshit. I remember Katherine walking around in horseshit.
