Rubonia Mardi Gras

Rubonia

The annual Rubonia Mardi Gras is one of the biggest parties in Manatee County. HERALD-TRIBUNE ARCHIVES

What began in 1980 as a small celebration in a tiny community, near Palmetto and north of Bradenton has exploded into one of the biggest annual festivals in Manatee County. Thousands of people are expected to attend the Rubonia Mardi Gras, which runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.  Officially speaking, the main attraction is the parade that starts at 2 p.m. but, really, it's all about the party, like purchasing Solo cups of Grey Goose, neat, for $3 from some lady doing business from her front yard. Yeah, check out The Scenestress' account of surviving Rubonia last year and here's our photo gallery from last year's event.

8 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday; Rubonia Community Center, 1309 72nd St E, Palmetto; $2 suggested donation; 565-9824; ruboniamardigrasinc.org.
