The caber toss is one of the most popular events at the Sarasota Highland Games and Celtic Festival. HERALD-TRIBUNE ARCHIVES

The Sarasota Highland Games and Celtic Festival celebrates its 20th year this weekend with another rowdy round of Scottish dancing, kilt wearing, haggis consumption, bagpipes blaring and epic feats of strength. Caber tossing remains one of the main attractions. It involves hoisting and flipping a long, heavy wood pole in attempt to make the top land nearest to the thrower, with the end pointed exactly straight. The Scottish hammer throw is another popular event, with pro competitors taking a metal ball attached to the end of a shaft and hurling it over the shoulder more than 100 feet.

9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday; Sarasota Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota; $15 (under 12 free); sarasotahighlandgames.com.
