FSU/Asolo Conservatory student Jefferson McDonald will be revealing a lot of himself in front of audiences when he takes on the role of Spike in Christopher Durang's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," opening Jan. 24 at Asolo Rep.
He's not alone. The play, which won the 2013 Tony Award for best play, is a popular entry this season at many regional theaters.
Spike is an aspiring actor who often wears little on stage and is called on to act silly. The New York Times interviewed a number of actors, including McDonald, about their fitness and diet regimens and what it takes to play the character.
