Here are five things to know about singer/actress Katharine McPhee before attending her performance Monday at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota. I also added one thing she probably wishes you – and the rest of the world – didn’t know. It’s a bit scandalous.

1. She's responsible for "McPheever": Katharine McPhee became famous for creating "McPheever" fans and finishing as the runner-up on "American Idol" in 2006. She wowed judges with her a cappella rendition of "My Funny Valentine" and several other key performances but it wasn’t quite enough to top Taylor Hicks.

2. She's a pop star: McPhee's 2006 "Idol" single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and then her 2007 self-titled debut album shot to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and includes the hit "Over It." McPhee told Rolling Stone magazine her next album will include more pop and EDM (electronic dance music) elements.

3. She likes Adele, and James Brown: Following a November concert last month in New York, The Buffalo News reported in a glowing review that McPhee performed songs made famous by an eclectic array of artists including the Eurythmics, Adele, James Brown and Frank Sinatra.

4. She starred in "Smash": NBC's critically-acclaimed musical drama television series lasted for two seasons before being cancelled in May. McPhee's performance as ingenue Karen Cartwright earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice TV Breakout Performance.

5. She turned heads at The 2013 Golden Globes: McPhee landed on E!: Entertainment Television's Best Dressed list for wearing a satin gown by Theyskens' Theory featuring a plunging neckline. "I wanted to do something sexy this year. Last year I was flirty and sweet," she told E!

6. She kissed, and the world saw: McPhee used to tweet on a pretty daily basis but hasn't published a single character on the social networking site since Oct. 20. Probably had something to do with the whole smooching scandal. TMZ published photos of McPhee kissing her former “Smash” director Michael Morris in Hollywood while both are married to other people Oct. 22.
