He dazzled his hometown crowd in September with a show at Robarts Arena. Then, our famed local resident surprised the rock world later the same month by performing with his former Allman Brothers Band member Derek Trucks in New York. On Friday, Dickey Betts returns to a Sarasota venue to celebrate his 70th birthday — actual birth date is Dec. 12 — with a performance Friday at the White Buffalo Saloon that will benefit Toys for Tots.

The guitar hero, songwriter and singer responsible for such Allman Brothers Band classics as "Ramblin' Man," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," "Blue Sky" and "Jessica" will be joined by his backing band Great Southern. Special guests are also expected. Daughter Kim Betts, a talented performer of popular country music, will open the show with backing by her Gamble Creek Band.

Incidentally, Betts' former Allman Brothers Band mate Gregg Allman performs in Sarasota on Jan. 8 with his son, Devon, opening.
