Tom Harris of Long Trail Brewing Co. in Vermont has taken over from Mike McCarthy, brewery founder Jeremy Joerger said.

"I couldn't be more excited about Tom," Joerger wrote in an email. "He's the total package -- a perfect fit for JDub's. He has years of production experience at a large, production brewery, along with the passion of a home-brewer. His culinary background, experience in the beer industry, approach to brewing and warm personality are going to be fundamental in this companies success, both now and as we move forward."

Joerger had no comment on the reasons behind McCarthy's departure.

I suspect the hiring of Harris has a lot to do with the recent surge in activity from JDub's, including tastings at World of Beer and Growler's Pub, along with an appearance at the South Florida Brewers Guild Fest on Nov. 2 and a recent day spent brewing at Brewers' Tasting Room in St. Petersburg.

This major staffing change at the brewery must have been one of the things Joerger alluded to in a recent online update. I would normally be concerned about such a change at a brewery that hasn't even opened, but JDub's seems to be picking up steam after a long quiet period.

The brewery began construction on Wednesday, and HGTV was there to film it.

I hope to have a sit-down interview with Harris soon.
