He played John Lennon in the road show of "Beatlemania" in 1976. He portrayed Buddy Holly in the 1987 film "La Bamba." And he had a Top 40 hit in 1982 with "Someday, Someway."

That's Marshall Crenshaw. And he's coming to Sarasota on Nov. 14, playing in a benefit for WSLR at Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court. Tickets are $17 in advance, $20 at the door – available at wslr.org.

The Detroit singer-songwriter, who turns 60 on Nov. 11, has 10 albums to his credit. Several of his songs have been covered by other artists, including "You're My Favorite Waste of Time," "Whenever You're On My Mind" and "Some Hearts." He also penned the title track to the 2007 film "Walk Hard," snaring a Globen Globe Award nomination for Best Original Song.
