The Cortez Stone Crab Festival, a celebration of Florida's most prized crustaceans and the region's greatest fishing village, returns for its second year this weekend to the shores of north Sarasota Bay in Manatee County.
From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at N.E. Taylor Boatworks in Cortez, the festival will draw all the Cortezians, many of them commercial fishermen, plus throngs of seafood enthusiasts and live music enthusiasts. Local stone crab claws, lots of local, delicious stone crab claws, plus vendors and more food and drinks will be available from the nearby Swordfish Grill and Cortez Kitchen.
Headlining the festival is The Michael Allman Band, whose singer is the son of Gregg Allman and spent a summer living with his rock star dad on Anna Maria Island in the early 1980s (read my interview with Michael Allman). Doug Deming (my Deming interview), TC & The Trouble Makers, Razing Cane, Democracy and Karyn and the Uprights are also among the music acts performing this weekend in Cortez.
