The Players Theatre is marking the 12th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a reading of Anne Nelson's play "The Guys."
Pam Wiley is directing the reading, which features Allan Kollar and Ann Gundersheimer. Kollar plays a fire captain named Nick in New York who seeks the help of a writer in preparing eulogies for some of the men he lost on Sept. 11. Gundersheimer plays the writer, Joan, who helps him tell the stories with humor and emotion that touch on common bonds.
Nelson adapted the play from her own experience helping a real fire captain with a similar task.
The play had its premiere in 2002 and has since been performed in 48 states and numerous countries around the world. Such stars as Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Anthony LaPaglia and Sigourney Weaver have starred in the play, and Weaver was featured in the film version of the story.
The Players production will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets are $10 and a portion of ticket sales and 100 percent of donations will benefit the Sarasota Firefighters Benevolent Fund.
