The Sarasota Ballet's season-opening fundraiser, "Meet me at the Barre," has been scheduled for 5 p.m. October 14 at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts.
The annual event, during which dancers and staff of the company are introduced and mingle with supporters, kicks off an ambitious season that will open with "Theatre of Dreams" featuring choreography by company dancers, on October 25. Director Iain Webb will give a preview of highlights to come, including additions to the repertoire by Frederick Ashton, Will Tuckett and Anthony Tudor.
While several dancers from last season have left the company -- notably principal Sara Sardelli (who retired, but joined the administrative side as Outreach Coordinator), soloist Rita Duclos (who married over the summer and moved to Europe) and longtime corps member Steven Windsor -- several new dancers have been added, bringing the total number to well above 40.
Proceeds from the fundraiser, which includes wine and h'ors d'oeuvres, go, in part, to the fund that supplies dancers with pointe shoes and ballet slippers. Tickets are $50 and can be reserved by calling Lydia Landa at 923-0298 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
