Though Sammy Davis, Jr. died 13 years ago, audiences still love the man dubbed “Mr. Entertainment.”
That’s why the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is bringing back last year’s hit production of “Sammy Tonight!” starring De’Zhon Fields. The performer has toured the country in his one-man show playing the legendary singer, dancer and actor, and the production was a sold-out hit in Sarasota.
Fields is back for a second run at the Westcoast Aug. 21-Sept. 1, performing such hits as “That Old Black Magic,” “Mr. Bojangles,” “Candy Man” and “I’ve Got the World on a String,” among many others, with a couple of back-up singers from the Sarasota troupe.
For most of his life, Fields said he has been told of his resemblance to Davis.
“I hope that for those who have seen Sammy in person this will bring back wonderful memories,” he told the Herald-Tribune last year. “That’s the ultimate compliment”
Performances are at the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, 616 10th Way, Sarasota. Tickets are $29.50. For more information 366: 1505; wbttsrq.org.
