The show is appropriately called "Vaudeville," and is scheduled for a major presentation in April at the Sarasota Opera House, in what producer Nicholas Mitsis hopes will be the start of a national tour with the potential for runs on Broadway or Las Vegas. He also plans to stage an annual Vaudeville festival in Sarasota beginning 2015.
That's all in the future. But first, Mitsis is organizing an audition on Aug. 24 at the Opera House for singers, actors, acrobats, jugglers, impersonators and any other kind of act that might fit into the show.
He said he has signed an international array of talent to perform in April, and hopes that when the show tours it will have local talent in each city.
"That's 'voix de ville,' the voice of the city," Mitsis said. "That's where Vaudeville comes from. We plan to incorporate local acts in this section, to perform alongside renowned artists."
The August 24 audition, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., begins with a reception, with auditions starting at noon. The audition is open to the public.
