Loretta Lynn, one of the most important recording artists of the past century, will perform Sept. 14 at The Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. Lynn, who recently turned 81, rarely tours and has seldom played anywhere in Tampa Bay. Tickets for this special show gop on sale at noon June 7.

The author of the book and song that became the movie "Coal Miner’s Daughter," Lynn had her first hit in 1960 with "Honky Tonk Girl," inked a deal with Decca Records and her debut, 1962's “Success,” became the first of her 51 Top 10 hits and led to an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry. Unlike most country and pop artists of the time, Lynn wrote the majority of her songs. She also had excellent taste in outside material, leading her to record the clever and controversial"The Pill," a song about birth control.

“I just wrote about things that happened,” Lynn said in a statement. “I was writing about things that nobody talked about in public, and I didn’t realize that they didn’t. I was having babies and staying at home. I was writing about life. That’s why I had songs banned.”

In 1972, Lynn became the first woman in history to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year trophy. She's was inducted to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983, inducted into the national Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York in 2008 and presented a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

A new generation of listeners became hip to Lynn when Jack White produced her excellent 2004 album "Van Lear Rose." White duets with Lynn on the single "Portland Oregon." It's a rollicking number about booze and love that Lynn wrote.

Tickets for Lynn's show in St. Petersburg are $29.50, $35.50, $39.50, $45.50 and $50.50 and may be purchased online at TheMahaffey.com, charge by phone at (727) 893-7832 or in person at The Mahaffey Theater Box Office. The Mahaffey Box Office is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday or at least 90 minutes prior to any ticketed event. There are no added charges ever on tickets purchased directly from The Mahaffey Theater.
