Met Opera disbands resident ballet

Just heard that the Metropolitan Opera has bought out the remaining eight dancers in its resident company, putting an end to a tradition that dates back to 1883.

While it's not that surprising given today's economics -- and though the Met insists it will still have a strong dance presence in the appropriate operas -- why does this make me feel so sad?
