The original roller derby team of Bradenton, Sarasota and Venice, Bradentucky Bombers have been bashing opponents from around the state for the past seven years. The team of women is led by Bombers founder Gigi Ramoan (aka Valeri Rose). She's best known in the rink for her height, nose ring and signature stride.

On Sunday, the Bombers have a bout against the Alachua Hunnies. For those not up to date on the roller derby of today, at least as practiced by the Bombers, it no longer resembles the pro wrestling-style silliness seen on TV in the1960s and ’70s. It's a real sport. Fighting, tripping, kicking and hair-pulling are not allowed and severely penalized. Also, the tracks are flat rather than banked.

7 p.m. Sunday (May 26), Astro Skate, 3611 3rd St. W. Bradenton; $10, $12 (door); 747-8602; bradentuckybombers.net
