Bernie Yanelli's "A Little Help," has been named the winner of Theatre Odyssey's 2013 10-Minute Play festival.
Yanelli had two scripts included in this year's festival and his work also has been included in past festivals. He also has been a frequent contributor to the Players Theatre's full-length new play festivals each summer.
Catherine Randazzo, president of Theatre Odyssey, directed the play, which featured Tami Vaughn, Jenny Aldrich and Don Walker.
Connie Schindewolf, another frequent Theatre Odyssey contributor, received an Honorable Mention for her play "They're Gonna Kill Gertie," one of the two scripts she had included in this year's festival. The other, "Leaving Nic," received an Audience Favorite Award.
“Telling a story on stage in ten minutes can be a challenge," said Vice President Tom Aposporos, one of the founders of Theatre Odyssey. "It’s always exciting to see what the actors and directors do with the playwrights’ work. This year’s finalist selections were half comedy and half drama, so we had a good mix and an excellent group of professionals to present the work.”
For the first time this year, the festival also included the winner of a recent high school 10-minute play competition.
Since its founding in 2006, Theatre Odyssey has presented nearly 70 plays by Sarasota area writers. It has now published two volumes of scripts. For more information: theatreodyssey.org
