Frank Galati's production of the musical "1776," a hit last fall at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, will be getting a second production at American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.
Artistic Director Carey Perloff announced that her company's next season will open with "1776," which is described as a coproduction with Asolo Rep.
Galati will again direct the Tony Award-winning musical about the efforts to win passage of the Declaration of Independence, and at least several of the leading performers seen in Sarasota are expected to be featured in the San Francisco production.
The production is also a boost for Asolo Rep, according to Linda DiGabriele, the theater's managing director.
"We are very excited about this collaboration with another well regarded regional theatre," she said in a statement. "It means Asolo Rep's work is being seen across the country, and this expands our reputation for artistic excellence nationally. It also results in a positive economic benefit for us, because ACT is renting our sets and costumes, and for the actors and artists involved with our production, who get more work."
