Bikers rumbling down River Road want to know.

Snowbirds pulling off I-75 want to know.

Boaters cruising along the Myakka River want to know.

“Is it open?” they shout over to the Snook Haven restaurant. If they ask between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., then the answer is “Yes.”

After being closed for more than six months, Snook Haven has reopened for lunch, for now. The next step is a license to sell beer and wine. Then opening for dinner, too.

Fans of the place are making the long drive down a dusty road to a bend in the river.

“It looks about the same — I like that,” says Barbara Portz of Venice. “I don’t want it to change. It’s a great place back here. I like Old Florida.”

Sarasota County still owns 2.5 acres of land for Snook Haven Park along the Myakka River. There are canoe and kayak rentals, along with river boat tours.

The new owners of the restaurant concession are the Pachota family of Venice. Mike Pachota and his 32-year-old son, Justin, have run Sharky’s on the Pier at Brohard Beach. Now they’re moving inland.

“One of our slogans at Sharky’s was ‘Smack dab on the beach,’” Justin says. “We’re calling this ‘Smack dab on the river.’”

He and his wife, Cherie, will manage the restaurant. They met when both of them worked at a restaurant chain called Smokey Bones. Barbecue is a focus of the new Snook Haven, with pulled pork, beef brisket and smoked chicken on the menu.

“We installed a smoker out here,” Pachota says. “We’re actually smoking all our own food. I think even the veggie wrap is smoked right now.”

When Snook Haven gets its beer license, he plans to offer brands such as Yeungling, Amber Bock and Cigar City. He’s trying find a supplier of alligator meat so the restaurant can serve the gator bites people remember from the old place.

“We knew as soon as we opened, we’d have people coming in,” Pachota says. “We probably had 100 on the first day."

Elayne Sweet took her granddaughters to lunch at Snook Haven last week. She had a sandwich platter, while the girls ate mac-and-cheese off the children’s menu.

She’s ready for the return of bluegrass music on Thursdays.

“The banjo playing was out of this world,” Sweet says. “I was there for that, a really nice afternoon.”

Portz looks forward to the Snook Haven scene of lively weekends on the Myakka.

“It’s a mix of bikers, resort people — and us, I think we’re in the mix,” she says, laughing. “This spot on Sundays, it was an event. We’d bring friends here to experience it.”

You're not saying, are you, that the Pachota family will move FROM Sharky's on the Pier? They're ADDING Snook Haven to their portfolio, yes? At least that's what I hope you're saying, because that would be FANTASTIC NEWS! My family loves Sharky's and we love Thursday Bluegrass at Snook Haven. This new management at Snook is terrific news.

I have visited Snook Haven a few times, and have video of it on my fb page. The food is not what stood out to me. I love the fact that it is nestled in the woods along the Myakka river, and Sunday afternoons there are the best!! I loved watching a girl named Virginia dance with her sister and her friends, wearing some crazy get ups, but making my trips over there all the more worthwile and fun! I plan to be there again this Spring, and hope to see them all there. It would also be nice to see my friends from Port Charlotte (Chris & Elizabeth). Not sure if they're still in the area, but good people!

At Frieda/Jacksonville...just so you are aware Snook Haven is still the same name and place, but would not be the same menu/food as when you were there last, that one has been closed a while and new owners bought it and opened last week. It's BETTER!! :)
While the owners deserve kudo's, the chef there should be in the mentions in all these articles popping up, without good food, no restuarant makes it, people come back for the food!! ;)

As long as they dont hose the patrons with overpriced beers and 9 dollar burgers they will be packed on weekends and make a fortune and will have constant repeat business

Went there this past Sunday, fairly crowded. My group had burgers, catfish sandwich, and pulled pork. All were good and given the crowd they turned the food out pretty fast. No question the food is a vast improvement over the prior concessions. My pitchers of beer were a bit foamy but other than that a good time. One dislike is the increased river traffic. I have been kayaking the Myakka for 8 years. Most days there are zero or very few boats. It seems they are drawing in boaters. It's too bad because kayaking the river is the true way to experience nature loud and smelly exhaust detracts from the experience a bit. It seems I will be going more during the week if I can get away from the grind.

I hope that they make it the way it used to be yrs ago, i remember going there with my family, more then 20 yrs ago and it was the best. we went there almost every Sunday for more then 10 yrs, and always had so much fun.. we loved going out on the boats, and it was awesome when we could go swimming.. until they started with all the changes. I loved the old smoke house were we could get some good old BBQ dinner plate, and the band playing country music, mixed with some old time rock n roll. I remember thinking I couldn't wait till I could bring my children here and share this experience.. then just like everything the county comes in and screws it up. :( I know it will never be the same, but I hope you can/will make it close. I know it would be packed every weekend... good luck, I will deff come check it out. after you get the beer in.. lol

as long as you give a trunk of cash every sunday morning to the bagman from the city commisssion, you can stay...dont matter if you charge 12 for a grilled cheese sandwich during the season to the locusts aka snow birds aka scum birds, thst is ok but if I dont look like a locust dont charge me that or I will get in my cuddy and drop 20 gallons of oil in front of the locusts......

They don"t pay their musicians like normal good bars and restaurants do. Instead, the staff will be shoving "the hat" that they pass in your face numerous times so that the patron pays what the establishment should be paying. You won't find me there.

No they dont pay their musicians as they would pay any other service that provides their skill/craft. I was told "why should we pay, let the people pay".. Now thats love for your customes. And in how many other ways will cornes be cut. I'd be scared to know.

How did these clowns get two prime spots
Gotta wonder
I am calling for a complete investigation
It ain't because they serve good food
The cheap b@stards will not even pay for the musicians who come out to play
It's time for me to call ASCAP
