The Scenestress' Weekend Picks, Dec. 14-16

/

Sometimes I like to spread my weekend out over, well, the whole weekend. Other times, however, I like to cram it all into one crazy night and call it a job well-done. If I were to do the latter this weekend, this is how I'd go about it:

FRIDAY 12.14

A snow mountain? In Sarasota? See it for yourself this Friday.

I'd get started nice and early with a bit of the impossible: I'd go and play in the snow at the opening day of Sarasota Snow Fest over at the Sarasota County Fairgrounds. Over the course of 10 days, they'll truck in about 70 to 100 tons of that frosty goodness for our Floridian amusement. There'll be live entertainment and dance music for the grown-ups, and oodles of activities to keep the kiddies busy should you come with the whole family unit in tow. Admission and almost everything else about the Snow Fest is free; just pay $5 for parking and bring a little extra folding money for a snack before your next stop ...

The Shamrock Pub. There, towering over the bar, six-and-a-half feet of pure niceness (a.k.a. Ben Thurmond) will be pulling taps to benefit the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC). Not only is he a local rock star with indie band The Send-Offs, he also has a tasty collection of tunes by female rockers that he plans to jam all night. A portion of sales and all tips will go straight to SPARCC. Come for the cause, stay for the specials, complimentary light bites by Word of Mouth and the chance to win prizes from SPARCC's Treasure Chest, a gem of a resale shop.

Once you feel a little limber, but not too loosey-goosey, it's time to scoot to the Stardust Skate Center for the All-Night Skate Party! For $20, you can skate to your little heart's content between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 7 a.m., and scarf down a free breakfast at 1:00 a.m. This event is open to all ages, so remember to share the rink, have some semi-clean fun and don't be a creep. Happy Friday the 14th, everyone!
