Beer Geek contest: Win a beer stein from Gecko's Grill and Pub

/

Gecko's Grill and Pub at 1900 Hillview St.  in Sarasota has been ramping up the craft beer selection. They started by hosting a free beer tasting on the second Thursday of the month.

Gecko's Grill and Pub Beer Guru Club prizes

Now, they are starting their own loyalty program, and calling it the Beer Guru Club. You're probably familiar with these programs. Each different beer you drink earns points that can be used toward prizes. Other craft beer bars like World of Beer, Mr. Beery's, the Cock & Bull and Growler's Pub have been doing their own loyalty programs for a while. These programs not only help bars to earn more, they also reward their most loyal customers and broaden the palates of beer drinkers.

I've never joined one of these programs. Back in the days when I went out frequently the Cock & Bull -- which was then on Main Street, which wasn’t paved in those days -- hadn't started its Alchemy program. And I -- as the song says -- don't get around much anymore.

Gecko's program, unlike some others, is free to join, which is always nice. Drink 25 beers (which are recorded on a card kept at the bar) and you earn a $10 gift certificate. Fifty beers gets you a Beer Guru T-shirt. And 120 beers gets you a personalized stein. Of course, you aren't allowed to drink, say, 25 beers in one night. You have to space this stuff out.

But one lucky person will be able to enjoy some of these prizes without the "work" of drinking the beers. Gecko's has donated a Beer Guru prize pack , which I'm giving away. It's similar to my Narragansett Father's Day necktie contest back in June.

The contest

Use the comment field below to post your favorite craft beer bar story by 11:59 p.m. Aug. 6.

Please make sure it's fairly family friendly and make sure you use a real email address so I can contact you if you win.

The prize

The writer of my favorite story will win a Beer Guru T-shirt, $10 Gecko's gift certificate and glass beer stein, along with a free drink card and some Ticketsarasota.com Beer Geek swag. Plus your story will be published in Ticket and on Ticketsarasota.com. FYI: I may need to edit the winning story for length or content before publication.

The rules

Make sure you enter your story below (and only below) by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. Aug. 6. I'm the sole judge of this mini contest and my decision is final. The prize pack includes a Beer Guru T-shirt, stein, $10 Gecko's gift certificate and drink card plus Beer Geek and Ticketsarasota.com swag. I reserve the right to edit your story for print or online. And to belabor the obvious: If I can't contact you, you won't get a prize. Have fun!

Many beer drinkers, like myself, haven't a clue that there are beers out there that taste of many things. I always thought the beer was supposed to taste like Coor's, Bud or Millers. Who'd a thunk that beer can taste like blueberries?. Certainly not me until a good friend invited me to her beer tasting event she started where she works on Hillview.

My wife and I arrived to find two guys in the front of the establishment, each with many beers on ice. We started in by reading what ever of the selections tasted like and some other information on printed sheets on the tables. Then came the tasting. We sampled many and were amazed at the many different bodies and tastes of these different beers. I found one I rather liked and when to our table and ordered a pint. It was wonderful.

I think I have found a new hobby, lol. Now, when are the craft beers doing LOW Cal?

All in all, a wonderful and ongoing experience. Hopefully and soon to be a Beer Guru. Thanks to that special friend, she knows who she is.

Craft beer in Florida? You have GOT to be kidding…..the home of mass market beer? Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest where craft beers have taps in the smallest taverns, we were starved for a good draft beer in our new home, Sarasota. All of a sudden, like the proverbial “Fountain of Youth” craft beer bars sprung forth. While they differ in size, shape and personality, they ALL serve that wonderful experience of discovering new tastes and flavors. The arrival of Gecko’s Grill & Pub and their Thursday beer tasting made discovery even more fun. What better than to taste, share and discuss with friends, followed by dinner and a pint or bottle of your new “favorite”…..life doesn’t get much better…and it’s here in Florida!

Having grown up in Ireland and with a long family history of being involved with beer brewing and the bar business, my passion for craft beer runs deep!
As soon as I could legally bartender 12 years ago I found a bar where the passion for great beer was as strong as mine. A great Irish pub in South Georgia with a beer selection of over 300 choices. I felt at home!! After moving to Sarasota my goal has been to bring unique, interesting and flavorful craft beers to my customers as well as educate people on the amazing beers that are out there.
Being a part of the Gecko's team has been such a joy and if you are beer lover like me then lets met and discuss some brews. :)

Many of us are aware that in the wine business there is literally, a countless amount of vineyards and varietals of grapes. Simple check out the wine section compared to the beer at some of your local grocers- More than you can ever Imagine.
Just recently I have thought the same of micro or craft beers.
More and more micro-brewers are expanding and distributing into larger markets. The winners are us the quality before quantity beer drinkers.
With more and more establishments offering craft beers – once you become a craft lover it enhances the beer drinking experience. One of my early
Experiences and with craft beer was being at a beer/wine only bar, it was closing time, one of my cohorts wanted to do a SHOT (Not going to happen). However,
the friendly (As friendly as can be @1:59am) barmaid suggested a certain brew that we split between 4 guys- the 3 oz serving was all we could handle at that stage of the evening. I guess what I’m saying is with craft beers you can enjoy so many types, flavors, and specialty brewing processes – probably more then we can ever imagine.

I was never a huge beer fan before a few years ago. I just drank whatever was there and didn't really care about it. Normally I would drink wine or mixed drinks. However; after learning a few things from my friend Fiona and my boyfriend I started trying craft beers and actually enjoying them! I can now say I pride myself on trying all different types from everywhere I visit. I can also say that Geckos has always had a great selection and I wish I lived closer so I could frequent more often!! :)

The Gecko's on Hillview has become my go to place for all things craft beer! The tastings are a wonderful way to broaden horizons and try things that may initially seem out of the box if you're unfamiliar with craft beers. I was never much of a beer person, but with the suggestions of Fiona and the rest of the staff I've expanded my knowledge and my beer palate. I can always count on something new and interesting coming from Gecko's ever rotating selection of great beers.

Once upon a time there was a beer called Cigar City Vanilla Maduro. One of the tastiest brown ales in the universe. The lovely Fiona, of Geckos fame, was privy to my love of this wonderful beer. Not only did I get a PERSONAL invite to the tapping of this keg...I got a PERSONAL reminder...and a PERSONAL hug right before digging into this glorious ale! (actually...digging into a few of these glorious ales!) My point being...ANYONE can simply pour a beer. NOT everyone GETS IT. The Geckos crew...they get it. That is why this is one of my favorite beer stories. CHEERS!

My family and I have been going to the Sarasota Brewing company for years, I have a six year old daughter Erika. When she was 3 she asked what is up those stairs daddy? I told her that is where Batman lives. Till this day she kind of still believes batman lives upstairs @ the brewing company.

Over the past 6-7 years I have become a true member of the Craft Beer drinking crowd. Since Gecko's Beer Guru Club constantly rotates their beers, I have the opportunity to taste new and different craft beers regularly. Through the years, I have noticed that craft beer drinkers will find they enjoy and sometimes have to do a little research to find their favorites. I have been using an app for my smartphone to log my craft beers and can track the ones I like along with adding my own personal comments. Well this app can link to my friends and they can see the beers and their locations. One night I logged a craft beer that little to my knowledge, one of my friends was searching for. The next day he drove across town to the location where I had logged the craft beer. Unfortunately, the beer was sold out, which led him back to searching. He noticed I was at another craft beer bar and called me to see if they had the beer he wanted. Luckily they did which made him happy for a night.

I have seen craft beer drinking grow. There are so many craft beers and they all have different recipes that make them unique. Craft beer drinkers can find many beers from the many styles that meet their liking. Thanks to Gecko's for all the work they have done to give me one place to try so many different craft beers.

My favorite craft beer story is my first experience with this branch of brewing. About four years ago on St. Patricks day I was of course drinking Guinness in Gulf Gate when a friends brother was obnoxiously telling me about a beer called Dogfish head 120 that was like drinking four beers in one. I at the time had no idea what this was and didn't even really believe him. So my brother and I left west end pub then headed down to this new bar Mr. beery's. After the initial shock of the price and the bitter alcohol soaked flavor first sip, I was not really feeling it. I was a novice, trying to decipher the complex flavor and why somebody would ever drink this more than once. At that point in time I had to part ways with my brother and meet some friends at carrabbas after only drinking two beers. By the time I got to the restaurant I was feeling the 20% and was so excited that my night hadn't even start in my eyes and I already felt like a million bucks. I told my friends about this crazy strong beer and I actually had to drink some water because it was starting to get to me. I ironically ran into the same brother I had just left, he was with his girlfriend and his head was resting on his crossed arms face down and she was scowling at me. Neither one of us had any idea what such a beer would do. After I stood next to their table obnoxiously telling her about this amazing beer I found my way to my friends. At dinner I was so excited and buzzed I managed to meet two ladies. I didn't make it out to the bars that. It was the best st. Patricks day ever though. I credit the mood from the dogfish 120. I right now have two bottles I purchased four months ago that I will be enjoying in another eight months.

I like the fact that some of these beer bars have a no smoking policy. However, I like geckos the most because I can get something good to eat while I enjoy the clean air inside. Also the bartender there has a wicked cool handlebar mustache.

Walked into Gecko's to see many excited people ready to taste some different beers. I was very excited to see two tables up front one with stout dark beers & one with lighter fruitier beers. It was a true adventure in beer tasting. I especially enjoyed being with good friends & working my way to becomming a Beer Guru.

Thanks to a special friend for the invite.

When I was first of age to drink I spent many of my nights drinking cheap beers on special. One night the bartender showed me an international beer rating book. I came across a wide variety of beers that I had never heard of. That sparked my interest to try a few different beers that night. I just wanna thank Carl from the Backstreet Pub for showing me the light.

The Brew Guru Club has changed my life and this is my story. I was once mired in a sea of mediocre mass-produced beers with very boring names. Promises of fun beach-going adventures surrounded by a bevy of bikini-clad models of perfection existed only in the slick marketing materials of the giant brewers. My thirst sought to be quenched but was only met with “less filling” and never “tastes great.” Until one day, I happened upon the oasis I would come to know as Gecko’s and a lovely lass named Fiona who would alter my consciousness in a grand way. Fiona introduced me to St. Peter’s English IPA and thus began my quest for my own personalized Brew Guru mug. Along the way, I have strengthened my ties to man’s best friend with brewers such as Flying Dog, Blue Dawg, Sea Dog, and Dogfish Head. I have explored new places from Breckenridge to Coronado to Fort Collins, from the North Coast to the Lost Coast, and from Cigar City to Clipper City to Mad River. I have quaffed brews with my new friends Arrogant Bastard, Blithering Idiot, Circus Boy, and Boris the Crusher. I have had some delicious romps with a few American Blondes and learned some great tricks from Elder Betty. I have seen a UFO, experienced a Tropical Heat Wave, witnessed Levitation, and met the Holy Grail Black Knight himself. I would never have dreamed that a free membership to the Brew Guru Club would have given me such riches. Thank you, Gecko’s, and thank you, Fiona. If you’ve got the time, they’ve got the beer…!

Craft beer is fantastic! So much better than all the watered down liquid the bigger sellers have. Love trying new ones each week!
