Beer review: Magic Hat +/- (Plus/Minus)

Beer: +/- (Plus/Minus)

Brewery: Magic Hat, Vermont

Notes: An English dark mild, a style with lower alcohol (this one is 4.2 percent) but not lower flavor. Known as session beers — brews you can drink several of without getting drunk. Magic Hat's version is lightly malty with some roasted grain flavors, mixed with a hint of fruity sweetness. This one's a little light for me; I prefer Cigar City El Lector.

I had the +/- in one of Magic Hats Spring samplers. I thought it adequate, but not a match for the black IPA that was also inside. The plus/minus was too light and had a strange mellow/sweet almost melon taste that I didn't like. The black IPA, however, was outstanding. It had the hop bite of an IPA, but some smooth notes from the dark malt used.

Russell, my review of their Black IPA, Demo, is coming next week. Though I had the opposite reaction you did: I prefer +/-. Have you tried their Vinyl Lager?
