Open-jawed attendees will be flooding Siesta Beach for five days as sandy artisans whip up artwork near the shoreline.

It’s the second annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition, and it begins Thursday (Nov. 10) at 9:30 a.m. with a Veterans Day opening ceremony.

From now until Monday, more than 24 of the most skilled sculptors from eight countries (Latvia, Italy, Canada, Singapore, Australia, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United States) will work in pairs to complete 10-to-12-foot creations.

These crafters will vie for $18,000 in prize money and the World Championships of Sand Sculpting Doubles Division title. There will also be music, lessons and demonstrations by Sand Lubbers, and more than 60 vendors. Last year, the event’s economic impact on Sarasota was $1.7 million.

Marvel at a large “welcome sculpture” honoring America’s veterans, and watch 10-minute-long “quick sand” speed sculpting matches at night.

If you dare, sign up and participate in the amateur bout. You just might dig up a hidden talent.

Opening times vary. The event is free and will benefit Mote Marine’s sea turtle program, but attendees can pay $5 for an admission bracelet to get an up-close view of the sculptors. 349-3800; crystalsand.org.
