Show Ski Tournament splashes in Sarasota this weekend

/

How many people can say they've seen a human pyramid of water skiers? Spectators who come out to the 2011 Southern Region Show Ski Tournament in Sarasota this weekend certainly will.

Taking place at the Ski-A-Rees Stadium on City Island, the 35th annual tournament will feature the Sarasota Ski-A-Rees, as well as teams from Tampa and Estero. Show ski enthusiasts can also expect individual skiers from seven southern states who will be competing for glory at the bay.

Put on by the Southern Region Show Ski Association, the tournament will take place in Sarasota for the first time in 10 years. Ski teams will be judged mostly on overall skiing along with showmanship while individual skiers will be rated on technical merit and artistic expression.

"It's constant action, there's always something happening in the water," said Tournament Director Kent Perry. "People can expect human pyramids, freestyle jumping and fun."

A show featuring all the skiers in the tournament will also take place, wrapping up the first day of competition.
