Review: Stone Double Bastard

/

I was excited to see this beer on the shelf at Total Wine & More on a recent visit. The last -- and first -- time I had Double Bastard was at the Oregon Brewers Festival in July 2002 in Portland, Ore.

Stone's Arrogant Bastard is the brewery's flagship beer. Double Bastard is the California brewery's extreme version of Arrogant Bastard. Both beers have very funny labels that insult you for not being worthy enough to drink the beer.

Double Bastard is a seasonal beer released each November. It's sold in 22-ounce bottles. Total Wine sells them for $7 each.

The review

It pours a very hazy brown with a short off-white head. The smell is all about hops.

The taste is very hoppy and bitter. This is -- like the name says -- a double version of Arrogant Bastard. Big malt flavors battle with big citrus hop notes. The high alcohol level is apparent, too.  It's excellent, with a body that's almost chewy.

Overall this is excellent, but what else would you expect from Stone. You have to drink this carefully, though, since it's 10 percent alcohol.

What if you don't want to drink a whole bottle at once?

I used a bottle capper (like this one) from my homebrewing days to re-cap this beer so I could drink it over two nights. If you don't want to buy a capper, you can use a lever bottle stopper like this one, which also works well on 750 mL bottles.

Those stoppers come in handy when you can't or don't want to drink a big bottle at once. Just don't use those vacuum stoppers, because they suck out all the carbonation in a beer, leaving it flat.

Agree with Alan that both the Bastard and D/Bastard are special treats. However, being a certified HOP HEAD, nothing beats Stone's Ruination IPA. Ain't it WONDERFUL that we now have a choice of many wonderful craft brewed beers in the Sarasota area.

Ivan, I agree that Stone Ruination is one of the best hoppy beers out there. It was on tap at World of Beer last week and was wonderful as always. Since you're a hophead, you need to try my all-time favorite beer, Bell's HopSlam, which will be on sale in the next few weeks. I cannot recommend it enough. It's the best hoppy beer available.

What a great idea, recapping a big bottle you can't finish with a bottle capper. I've been homebrewing for a decade, loving craft beer for twice that long, and it never occurred to me. I feel like a dummie. Big thumbs up to all things Stone, too! Spoiled out here in the west, we get 'em all!!! For true hop flavor, try to track down some Pliny the Elder out of Russian River Brewing, or the incredible 90 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head. Top 2 hoppy beers in the country for me!!!

I had Pliny the Elder a few years ago at O'Briens in San Diego. Fantastic stuff. I'm probably going back to Southern California this year, and will try my darndest to have it again.

I'm really looking forward to Bell's HopSlam, which comes out in a few weeks. Have you tried that beer? It's currently tied with Rogue's Imperial India Pale Ale for my No. 1-rated beer on BeerAdvocate.

All very fine, fine hop head brews. With the Exception of Bells, we get all those over here, in Japan. Pliny was so well made and wonderfully balanced between malt and hops. Union Jack Walker, too.
Have you guys tried Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA yet?
Man, the hops in there are wonderful! Great fruity punch in the face!
I do love Stone. Recently had Double Bastard 06 on tap over here. This post makes me want to grab an Arrogant Bastard on my way back from Tokyo, today!
